The Monroe Times, EagleHerald named 2021 Newspapers of the Year

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation honored the work of newspapers across the state during the WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest Awards Banquet on Friday, June 24, at The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club in downtown Madison, Wis.

Recipients of 2021 Newspaper of the Year Awards were Publisher Todd Colling and the EagleHerald, Marinette, (Daily Division) and Publisher John Ingebritsen and The Monroe Times (Weekly Division).

Jason Kreul named editor of the Fenimore Times

Jason Kreul, who previously worked for the Wisconsin State Journal reporter, has been named the editor of the Fenimore Times.

A native of Fennimore and longtime resident of Boscobel, Kreul is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Prior to joining the Times, Kreul worked as a writer for the State Journal in the early 2000s and, then, in the food industry before returning to journalism.

Journalist Charles Friederich dies at 87

Charlie Friederich, a longtime journalist for The Milwaukee Journal, died May 28, in Monroe. He was 87.

After earning his master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill, he began his journalism career as a reporter for the Binghamton (New York) Press. He moved to Wisconsin in 1961 to join The Milwaukee Journal, where he worked for almost 30 years. Friederich retired from The Journal in 1990.

Longtime Journal Sentinel cartoonist Stuart Carlson dies at 66

Stuart Carlson, a longtime Milwaukee Journal Sentinel political cartoonist, died Friday, June 10, at age 66.

Carlson, a West Bend native who earned an arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, served as a cartoonist for The Milwaukee Sentinel and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from 1983 to 2008. He was first hired by the Milwaukee Sentinel as a lifestyle reporter in the features department.
