Journalist Charles Friederich dies at 87

Charles Edward “Charlie” Friederich, of Brodhead, died May 28, in Monroe. He was 87.

Friederich was born in the small town of Western, Nebraska, on Friday, July 13, 1934, to Fred and Lydia Roth Friederich. He graduated from high school in Seward, Nebraska, in 1952 and from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln in 1956. He received a full-tuition scholarship to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where he received his master’s degree in journalism in 1959.

He began his journalism career as a reporter for the Binghamton (New York) Press, moving to Wisconsin in 1961 to join The Milwaukee Journal, where he worked for almost 30 years. During his first seven years at the Milwaukee newspaper, he did everything from writing obituaries to composing editorials. In 1968, he moved to Madison to cover the state Capitol for The Journal.

Friederich retired from The Journal in 1990.

A service celebrating his life will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at Pine Lake United Methodist Church Camp in Westfield.
