Online Seminar: Covering political extremism in the public square

Date: Sep. 20, 2022
Time: 9:30 am - 3:00 pm

Increased intimidation, threats and violence surround democratic process and participation in the United States. This free, one-day online workshop will help journalists stay safe and produce ethical, excellent stories for voters leading up to the 2022 midterms.

Poynter and PolitiFact are hosting a daylong, free online seminar from 9:30 a.m. CST – 3 p.m. CST on Sept. 20. You can sign up at this link through Sept. 16.

Covering Political Extremism in the Public Square is a labor of love for me and my colleagues at PolitiFact. We have seen firsthand the threats facing our democracy, and like you, we are interested in finding solutions and strategies to present to our readers and viewers.

We’ll kick off the training with a one-on-one discussion with Tim Alberta. Tim, a staff writer at The Atlantic, has extensively covered the growing extremism in U.S. politics both for the magazine and in his book “American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump.”

Throughout the day, we’ll focus on story ideas and strategies you can bring home to your newsroom. We’ll hear from reporters on the burgeoning democracy beat, and we’ll connect with Votebeat Editorial Director Jessica Huseman about the state of voting systems and processes across the country.

We’ll meet with experts studying the threats of extremists and the impacts they’re having on our public institutions and focus on how journalists can distinguish threats from politics-as-usual.

And we’ll hear firsthand from three elections officials from across the country to understand the threats they’re facing and where journalists are getting the story right … and where journalists can improve their game.

Register here by September 16th.
