USPS extends sack killing deadline

The U.S. Postal Service has extended the sack use moratorium for Periodicals mailers through Feb. 21, according to a release from the National Newspaper Association.

NNA, which has requested further extensions, noted that numerous members have reported difficulties obtaining flats trays to replace sacks in their locations. USPS has told the association that it has sufficient flats trays on hand, but there may be delays in getting them transported to offices where they are needed. 

12 students honored for highlighting importance of the First Amendment

Twelve high school and middle school students have been recognized by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation for their submissions to the 2022 Wisconsin Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest.

Students from 22 schools across the state participated in this year’s contest. Members are encouraged to republish the winning entries, which received prizes totaling $3,150.

Public still paying for fraud probe records fight

Many people in Wisconsin are under the impression that the disastrous probe into the state’s 2020 presidential election conducted by former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman is over, as are its costs to taxpayers. They’re wrong, writes Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council President Bill Lueders in the group's most recent "Your Right to Know" column.

The amount paid by taxpayers now stands at more than $2 million, including nearly $1.5 million in legal fees, according to a report by WisPolitics.com.

Annual Opee Awards now accepting nominations

The Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, a nonprofit group that works to protect access to public meetings and records, is now accepting nominations for its annual Openness in Government Awards, or Opees.

Nominations, along with supporting documentation, should be submitted by Friday, Feb. 10, to blueders@gmail.com
