Gary Mays returns to The Monroe Times as reporter

Gary Mays, who a decade ago served as news editor of The Monroe Times has returned to the paper as a reporter.

A native of Rockford, Ill., Mays earned his bachelor's degree from Illinois State University, where he served as editor of The Daily Vidette student newspaper. He went on to work in both public relations and newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, the Wisconsin State Journal, The Journal-Standard in Freeport, Ill., The Daily Journal in Kankakee, Ill., and The Monroe Times. He served as news editor of the Times from August 2010 until September 2011.

In his latest "Ad-libs" column, John Foust discusses three reasons that advertisers should be careful to limit their use of exclamation marks in ad copy.

"Of course, a well-placed exclamation mark is legitimate punctuation," Foust writes "But like your favorite dessert, it’s not smart to have too much at one sitting — especially when it comes to advertising."

Multi Media Channels buys The Sentinel & Rural News

Multi Media Channels has purchased The Sentinel & Rural News, a weekly newspaper based in the Owen-Withee community in Clark County. The sale was finalized Wednesday, Dec. 22.

Publishers Travis and Nicole Rogers announced their decision to sell and bid farewell to readers in their respective columns. They plan to continue contributing to the newspaper, including writing weekly columns. The Rogers were part of a four-person team that started the newspaper in March 2014.

James Burgess, former State Journal publisher and WNA past president, dies at 85

James E. "Jim" Burgess, a longtime publisher for Lee Enterprises, past president of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, and member of the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame, died Monday, Dec. 20, in Madison. He was 85.

Burgess was named publisher of his hometown newspaper — the La Crosse Tribune — in 1972. In 1984, he became executive vice president of Lee Enterprises and publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal, a role he held until 1993. A tireless advocate for the newspaper industry, Burgess served as president of both the WNA and Inland Press Association. In 2005, he made a $1 million gift to the UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication to help establish the school's Center for Journalism Ethics.

Former State Journal reporter Paul Rix dies at 74

Paul Adams Rix, a former state government reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, in Mequon. He was 74.

Rix spent his career as a newspaper and magazine reporter. He joined the State Journal in 1978 as a member of the newspaper's Capitol reporting team. Prior to his time with the Madison newspaper, he worked at the Clintonville Tribune and five years at the Kankakee (Ill.) Daily Journal.

Murray Cohen, owner of three Wisconsin weeklies, dies at 92

Murray Cohen, who owned the Delphos Herald newspaper group that includes three Wisconsin newspapers, died Tuesday, Dec. 7. He was 92.

In 1962, Cohen purchased his first newspaper, The Delphos Herald, a weekly publication in northwestern Ohio. Over time, he went on to buy more than a dozen weekly newspapers in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. In Wisconsin, Cohen's group owns the Vilas County News-Review in Eagle River, the Waushara Argus in Wautoma and The Three Lakes News.

State aid slows property tax growth in Wisconsin

Wisconsin property taxpayers should see one of the smallest increases in years on their December tax bills, with levies for school districts barely rising, technical college levies declining for only the second time in at least two decades, and a state tax credit rising sharply.
