Metro Milwaukee leads many peer metros in its concentration of worker talent in occupations linked to innovation and economic development, but is trending downward or lags its peers on key metrics like productivity, global exports, and venture capital investment.
Patricia "Pat" Kwallek, who served for many years as editor of the Grant County Herald Independent, died last month, the Lancaster newspaper reports. She was 88.
Kwallek started at the Grant County Independent in the 1950s, stayed on through the merger with the Grant County Herald and remained with the newspaper in various roles until her retirement in 1986. During more than 30 years with the Herald Independent, Kwallek served as a reporter, columnist, editor and photographer. She also was a correspondent for The Capital Times in the 1960s and 1970s, writing stories and shooting photos of Lancaster-area news for the Madison newspaper.

Michelle Drew, who has served as an assistant editor of the Vilas County News-Review since 2019, has been named news editor of the paper. Her promotion comes following the retirement of longtime editor Gary Ridderbusch.

Gary Mays, who a decade ago served as news editor of The Monroe Times has returned to the paper as a reporter.
A native of Rockford, Ill., Mays earned his bachelor's degree from Illinois State University, where he served as editor of The Daily Vidette student newspaper. He went on to work in both public relations and newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, the Wisconsin State Journal, The Journal-Standard in Freeport, Ill., The Daily Journal in Kankakee, Ill., and The Monroe Times. He served as news editor of the Times from August 2010 until September 2011.

Multi Media Channels has purchased The Sentinel & Rural News, a weekly newspaper based in the Owen-Withee community in Clark County. The sale was finalized Wednesday, Dec. 22.
Publishers Travis and Nicole Rogers announced their decision to sell and bid farewell to readers in their respective columns. They plan to continue contributing to the newspaper, including writing weekly columns. The Rogers were part of a four-person team that started the newspaper in March 2014.
James E. "Jim" Burgess, a longtime publisher for Lee Enterprises, past president of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, and member of the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame, died Monday, Dec. 20, in Madison. He was 85.
Burgess was named publisher of his hometown newspaper — the La Crosse Tribune — in 1972. In 1984, he became executive vice president of Lee Enterprises and publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal, a role he held until 1993. A tireless advocate for the newspaper industry, Burgess served as president of both the WNA and Inland Press Association. In 2005, he made a $1 million gift to the UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication to help establish the school's Center for Journalism Ethics.
