Russell John Newton, of Verona, died on May 21, 2022, after a three-year battle with ALS, at the age of 62. Newton spent most of his life working in the newspaper industry, beginning his career delivering for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison. As an adult, he held management positions with the Chicago Tribune, the (Norfolk, Va.) Daily Press, the Orlando Sentinel, the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union Tribune and the San Antonio Express.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 16, at Capital Brewery in Middleton.
Nelson Media Company has purchased The Denmark News, the newspaper has announced. The sale was effective as of July 1. NMC was founded two years ago by Chris Nelson, a 2003 graduate of Denmark High School. It is headquartered in St. Ansgar, Iowa, and includes properties in Wisconsin, Iowa and Arizona.
The Denmark News began as a joint venture between local businessmen Ryan Radue and Mark Hansen, who decided to start the newspaper soon after the former Denmark Press ceased publication in 2008.
The artwork of longtime newspaper publisher Walter Gander is on display in a special exhibit by the Walter E. Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River.
Gander, a longtime printer who once owned the Vilas County News-Review, immigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1898, and came to Eagle River in 1903. He took up painting later in life, creating landscape works of the Northwoods and scenes inspired by his childhood on the coast of England. The library exhibit, which runs through July 30, features samplings of Gander's work that have been reassembled through the generosity of family and friends.
