La Crosse Tribune editor Rusty Cunningham to retire after 41 years with Lee

After a 41-year career with Lee Enterprises newspapers, La Crosse Tribune editor Rusty Cunningham will retire Sept. 30, the newspaper announced Wednesday.

Cunningham said in the announcement that he looks forward to more time to spend with family and more opportunities to golf, though he will miss “being in the know” and working with the staff at the Tribune.

Reporter Lucy Ripp joins Herald-Independent and McFarland Thistle

Lucy Ripp is the newest member of the reporting staff of The (Monona/Cottage Grove) Herald-Independent and McFarland Thistle.

Ripp grew up in Cambridge before attending UW-Eau Claire, where she worked as a journalist and media assistant for the university. She also served as a marketing and social media intern for UW-Madison during the summer of 2017. She graduated in 2019 with her bachelor’s degree in communications.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel vacates longtime home ahead of move

Ahead of a planned move in November, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has begun clearing out its longtime home in a historic downtown building, the Milwaukee Business Journal reports.

While its staff has been working remotely since March due to the pandemic, the Journal Sentinel is vacating the offices at 333 W. State St., as a local developer prepares to convert the building into apartments. A drone video shot by photographer Mike De Sisti offers a last glimpse of the empty building prior to the move.

Retired journalist Greg Peck publishes book on Wisconsin hometown

Greg Peck, who in 2016 retired as opinion page editor of The (Janesville) Gazette, has published a book about his memories of growing up in Marshall, a small village about 20 miles northwest of Madison.

For every copy sold, Peck will donate $10 of the proceeds from his self-published book to the Marshall Area Historical Society. He will be signing the book, titled “Memories of Marshall: Ups and Downs of Growing Up in a Small Town,” from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 27, outside the historical society museum, 128 E. Main St.

Jason Adrians named executive editor of Wisconsin State Journal

Jason Adrians, a veteran journalist with more than 20 years of experience in newspapers, has been named executive editor of the Wisconsin State Journal.

Adrians fills the role vacated by John Smalley, who stepped down last month after nearly 12 years with the newspaper. In addition to leading the State Journal newsroom, Adrians will continue in his role as national editor for its parent company, Lee Enterprises.

Cap Times announces plans for virtual Idea Fest

Cap Times Idea Fest, now in its fourth year, will be held virtually over a two-week span, editor and publisher Paul Fanlund announced this week.

As in past years, the 2020 Idea Fest lineup features several prominent speakers. This year’s speakers include former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, investigative reporter and author Bob Woodward, Gov. Tony Evers and UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank.

Gannett Foundation to give $2.3 million to community-building nonprofits

The Gannett Foundation on Tuesday announced a $2.3 million crowdfunding and grant program for community-building nonprofits.

The initiative offers local nonprofits a national platform on which to fundraise, in addition to grants for the most exceptional projects. Last year, three Wisconsin nonprofits were recipients of grants totaling $45,000.

Mary Jo Villa leaving leadership role with APG, The Gazette

Longtime newspaper executive Mary Jo Villa is leaving her leadership roles with Adams Publishing Group and The (Janesville) Gazette, the company announced Monday.

Throughout her career of more than 30 years, Villa has held several executive leadership roles with The Gazette and its parent companies. She moved into her most recent role following APG’s purchase of Bliss Communication’s newspapers and printing facility in 2019.

Taking over for Villa as president of APG’s southern Wisconsin group is Orestes Baez, who comes to Wisconsin after spending two years in Michigan as the regional vice president and group publisher of a chain of Gannett-owned newspapers

Kevin Passon to take over as Antigo Daily Journal editor

Veteran journalist Kevin Passon has been named editor of the Antigo Daily Journal and will take over the role Aug. 31. He replaces Lisa Haefs, who retired earlier this month.

Passon currently serves as managing editor The (Cottage Grove) Herald-Independent and McFarland Thistle. Both newspapers are owned by Adams Publishing Group.

Wisconsin Newspaper Association
