Policy Forum identifies 5 keys to the next state budget

As state lawmakers begin deliberations on Gov. Tony Evers’ proposal for the 2023-25 state budget, a record projected surplus of $8.8 billion hands them an historic opportunity to make generational progress on some of the state’s most pressing policy challenges.

In a new state budget brief released by the Wisconsin Policy Forum, the statewide policy research organization identifies five keys it expects will be critical to the state’s future fiscal outlook, its economy, and the quality of life of its citizens.

Thepaperboy.news group purchases Sentinel & Rural News

Thepaperboy.news group of publications has purchased The Sentinel & Rural News from Multi Media Channels, effective Nov. 18, the two companies announced in a joint news release last month. The group, which includes the Stanley Republican and the Pierce County Journal, is published by John McLoone.

MMC, which purchased The Sentinel & Rural News in December from Travis and Nicole Rogers, said in the release it determined that the publication didn't quite fit into its geographical footprint.

UW System pledges $20,000 in support of Wisconsin Civics Games

As part of its effort to promote citizenship and civil dialogue, the University of Wisconsin System has announced an annual $20,000 commitment in support of the Wisconsin Civics Games, a statewide civics bowl hosted by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation.

The funds will support scholarships and cash awards for the Civics Games and its accompanying editorial writing and cartooning contests, as well as promotion of the programs.

Facebook Journalism Project awards nearly $340K to five Wisconsin newsrooms

Five Wisconsin newsrooms have been selected to receive nearly $340,000 in grants from the Facebook Journalism Project as part of the COVID-19 Local News Relief Fund Grant Program, Facebook announced Thursday.

They were The Cap Times, Madison365, Wausau Pilot & Review, Wisconsin Watch and Volume One. Three of the five media outlets — Madison365, Wausau Pilot & Review and Wisconsin Watch — also received $5,000 grants from FJP in early April.
