Tariffs modified, delayed to April 2

President Donald Trump agreed to tariff exemptions on March 6 for imports from Canada and Mexico that are compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement negotiated during the first Trump Administration. Both the News/Media Alliance and the National Newspaper Association sent advisories to their members announcing the exemptions.

The products will not be subject to the 25% tariffs until April 2. Through multiple sources, NMA has confirmed that newsprint, which includes magazine paper, is covered under the agreement.

Trump signed two amendments to the tariff orders he issued for Mexico and Canada earlier this week (linked here and here, respectively). The modifications were effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on March 7. The NNA said April 2 is also the date when reciprocal tariffs are due to take effect and there have been threats of new tariffs on Canadian products as recently as March 7. Paper suppliers should not be imposing the previously discussed “tariff surcharge” on shipments to our newspapers.

In addition to the tariffs, NMA is already seeing U.S. manufacturers announces price increases, so it is critical to have a unified grassroots effort to stop the tariffs from being implemented on all newspapers and magazines (large and small).

Please contact your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative immediately to tell them the harm that the tariffs will have on your company. The NMA has prepared a one-page brief and talking points for your use.

“This continues to be a volatile and evolving situation,” said NNA Executive Director Lynne Lance, “and we will advise of any changes as they are confirmed.”
