Carol Aultman, former Platteville journalist, dies at 79

Carol Illean Aultman, a former journalist whose career included a stop at The Platteville Journal, died Wednesday, March 2, at her home in rural Highland, Wis. She was 79.

Born June 1, 1942, in rural Pecatonica, Ill., she was the daughter of Helen O. (Houghton) and Lester A. Highbarger. She graduated in 1960 from Pecatonica High School.

Carol and Leland Aultman were married Jan. 21, 1965. Together they had five sons — Daniel, Bradley, Matthew, Jeffrey and Christopher — 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She also had four stepchildren — Teri, Brian, Karen and Dawn — and seven step-grandchildren.

Aultman’s first job was at Associated Publishers in Durand, Ill. She spent 15 years with the company and later served as editor of one of its newspapers, the Winnebago News.

After she and her husband moved to Highland in 1977, Aultman joined the staff of The Platteville Journal. She went on to work at McGuire Plumbing and Heating in Highland, Petrolane Gas Service in Dodgeville and Lands’ End in Dodgeville.

Honoring her request, no formal memorial service will be held for Aultman. A celebration of her life is planned from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 12, at Castle Rock Inn, 15040 Shemak Road, Muscoda.
