ANTIGO — Nearly four decades after she started at the newspaper, Antigo Daily Journal editor Lisa Haefs announced her retirement Friday.
Haefs started at the Daily Journal in October 1983 as a general assignment reporter and society editor. She also covered the Antigo school board and city council.
An Elcho native, Haefs once received a letter from former Daily Journal owner, publisher and editor Fred Berner complimenting her work in the school newspaper. Haefs graduated from Elcho High School in 1980 and went on to study at UW-River Falls before graduating with her journalism degree from UW-Superior.

Throughout her career Haefs covered a little bit of everything for the Daily Journal, except for sports. One of her favorites was Hidden Places, a long-running weekly feature in which Haefs and other staff members explored little-known locations in Langlade County, she said in the story announcing her retirement.
Haefs said she plans to remain active in the community, including as a member of the Historical Society board. She also looks forward to spending more time with her husband, Mike, and their pets at their home in Pelican Lake.
