Susan Johnson Hadler, a Wisconsin native who worked as a psychotherapist and writer, died July 18 in Madison. She was 74.
Hadler was born Jan. 24, 1945, in Oshkosh to David Selby Johnson, Jr., and Margery Laughlin. She graduated from Neenah High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from UW-Madison before getting her master’s and doctorate at the University of Maryland.

Susan and Jack Hadler were married in 1967, and they had two children, Jacques and Sarah. After three years in Tanzania, where Susan and Jack worked as teachers, they spent much of the rest of their lives in Washington, D.C.
Hadler worked as a psychotherapist and writer in Washington. Her articles were published in the Washingtonian and Reader’s Digest, and she also published two books, “Lost in the Victory” and “The Beauty of What Remains.” Prior to her death, Hadler was working on a biography of Paul Selby, her great-great-grandfather who was editor of several Illinois anti-slavery newspapers and a friend of Abraham Lincoln.
