Journalism causes supported by Evjue Foundation grants

Journalism-related causes received significant financial support from the William T. Evjue Foundation, the charitable arm of The Capital Times, which announced $2.4 million in grants on July 8, 2026.

The grants support Madison area non-profits and educational institutions during 2026.

Benefiting organizations included:

University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Letters and Science — $8,000 for the Madison Writing Assistance program; $10,000 for the School of Journalism’s Ethics conference; and $7,000 for the School of Journalism’s solving problems between journalists and community members initiative.

University of Wisconsin Press — $16,000 for the Evjue internships in publishing.

Simpson Street Free Press — $35,000 to support expanding its successful academic reading programming.

The Badger Project — $5,000 for its local journalism initiatives.

The Daily Cardinal — $5,000 to assist in funding summer journalism projects.

Wisconsin Watch — $15,000 in support of its investigative journalism projects.

The gifts bring to more than $74 million the total amount of grants made by the Evjue Foundation since it was established by the late Evjue, who started it in 1958. Upon his death in 1970, Evjue willed his controlling stock in the newspaper to a charitable trust that donates its proceeds to the foundation. The will provided that the money be used to support local charitable, educational and community nonprofits to pay back the community for its support of the newspaper he founded.

Decisions on grants are made by a 15-member board of directors.
