Editor Justin Runberg published his final column in the March 3, 2026 issue of the Amery Free Press.
Runberg thanked everyone who had a chance to work with, and noted that his grandparents were still alive and were able to see his accomplishment of joining the Free Press staff.
“I like to think they would be proud. Part of me is proud that I was able to come back home and do a job I enjoy in a city I have visited since I was a child,” Runberg wrote.
Runberg specifically called out his critics who pointed out his mistakes on social media: “I can understand some criticism, but sometimes people would go out of their way to show I was wrong or point out a mistake. Over the last four or so years, many of my former colleagues have left the industry because of this.”
The departing editor also explained the rationale behind his opinion column: “Having different opinions, no matter who you are, is not a bad thing. It is how you react to them, especially when it comes to politics.”
Differing opinions should be celebrated, Runberg wrote, not put down.
“If you don’t like it when other people tell you how to live your life, you shouldn’t do it to others. It is hypocritical,” Runberg wrote. “With all that said, if you see me around, come say hi. Let’s exchange ideas and talk about life as we all meander our way along.”
