A bill intended to inform Wisconsin drivers how much they are paying at the gas pump in federal and state fuel taxes has been created by Rep. Scott Allen, R-Waukesha, and Sen. André Franken. Jacque, R-New Franken.
A story about the bill appeared in the Nov. 11, 2025 issue of The Waukesha Freeman. According to the story:
“While the final price is clearly visible, the components of that cost are often a mystery to consumers,” Allen said in a news release.
The Gas Tax Transparency Act addresses tax transparency by creating section 98.09 of the statutes, which mandates that the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection design and provide a conspicuous sticker showing the current federal and state gas and diesel tax rates.
Federal and state gas taxes are used as a source of funds for road and infrastructure projects, according to the release.
The bill would not add any financial or administrative burden to gas station owners or operators, as the tax breakdown stickers will be provided, placed, and updated by state-certified inspectors at the time of pump inspection.
“We believe transparency is a fundamental pillar of good government,” Jacque said. “This is a straightforward step to provide the public with a better understanding of gas pricing, making the process seamless and ensuring our consumers are fully informed every time they fill up.”
