After earning his bachelor’s degree in journalism from UW-Eau Claire, Treinen started his career in 1992 as a reporter at the Pocono Record in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Two years later, he joined the Wausau Daily Herald as a reporter and has remained in Wisconsin ever since. He went on to serve as editor of the Daily Herald and the (Wisconsin Rapids) Daily Tribune before being named watchdog and investigations editor for USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin and, in 2019, news director.

He will become only the sixth editor in the history of The Cap Times, which was founded by William T. Evjue in 1917.

“Mark will be working with our staff to refine and evolve our focus, especially in the areas of public affairs and investigative journalism,” Fanlund said in the announcement.

As publisher, Fanlund will continue to manage The Cap Times’ event portfolio, write his column, serve as a board member of The Capital Times Co. and the Evjue Foundation, and oversee the newspaper’s business operations.
