Tom Miller has retired from The Gazette following a career spanning more than 40 years in newspapers, the longtime sports columnist, reporter and page designer announced in the Janesville newspaper last week.
After graduating from UW-Whitewater, Miller’s career started in 1979 at the Marinette Eagle-Star. He spent several years in Marinette before leaving in 1986 for Janesville, where he joined The Gazette sports staff.

For his first two decades with The Gazette, Miller primarily covered local high school sports. He also mixed in some college and pro sports and assisted with larger events, such as the 1994 NCAA men’s basketball tournament in Utah, the 2002 MLB All-Star Game in Milwaukee, and the 2004 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits Golf Course near Sheboygan.
Miller shifted to a different role for the final chapter of his career, serving as a page designer over the last 15 years. While he continued to write columns, his primary duties involved designing the sports section and headlining stories.
In his farewell, Miller noted that he hopes to continue contributing columns to The Gazette sports section on a part-time basis in retirement.
