Former Milwaukee journalist Marty Hintz dies at 75

Loren Martin “Marty” Hintz, a longtime Milwaukee journalist and author, died Sunday, Sept. 20, at his Shorewood home. He was 75.

Hintz was born June 1, 1945, in New Hampton, Iowa, to Loren E. and Helen Gertrude (Russell) Hintz. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of St. Thomas and his master’s degree from Northwestern University.

In 1967, Hintz moved to Milwaukee to work for the Milwaukee Sentinel as an editor and reporter. He transitioned to freelance work in 1975 and went on to author more than 125 books on a variety of topics.

He co-wrote several books with his wife, Pam Percy, including Food Lovers’ Guide to Wisconsin and Wisconsin Cheese: A Cookbook And Guide To The Cheeses Of Wisconsin. In 2009, they started Pampered Produce, offering organic produce to their members and hosting farm-to-table dinners.

Hintz was a mainstay in Milwaukee’s Irish-American community and a co-founder of the city’s annual Irish Fest. He also launched The Irish American Post in 1991 and served as publisher of the newspaper.

Hintz had three children, three step-children and 19 grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be announced.
