Five Wisconsin newsrooms have been selected to receive nearly $340,000 in grants from the Facebook Journalism Project as part of the COVID-19 Local News Relief Fund Grant Program, Facebook announced Thursday.
Wisconsin news organizations selected for grants were The Cap Times, Madison365, Wausau Pilot & Review, Wisconsin Watch and Volume One. Three of the five media outlets — Madison365, Wausau Pilot & Review and Wisconsin Watch — also received $5,000 grants from FJP in early April.

The grants stem from Facebook’s announcement in March of a $100 million global investment in news that includes $25 million in local news relief funding. FJP on Thursday announced nearly $16 million in grants awarded to more than 200 news organizations.
Newsrooms across the country submitted more than 2,000 applications for the COVID-19 Local News Relief Grant Program. FJP is providing grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 to the selected newsrooms. Wisconsin newsrooms will receive:
- Madison365: $99,953
- The Cap Times: $99,144
- Volume One: $57,000
- Wisconsin Watch: $100,000
- Wausau Pilot & Review: $40,000
FJP said remaining funds will go toward supporting longer-term projects focused on local journalism sustainability. This includes $2.5 million for Report for America, which selected six Wisconsin newsrooms to host seven journalists in 2020.
