Google launches Journalism Emergency Relief Fund

Google News Initiative on Monday announced its Journalism Emergency Relief Fund, which like a similar program recently launched by Facebook, aims to provide small and midsize newsrooms with support during the COVID-19 health crisis.

While the application deadline is April 29, we encourage newspapers to apply as soon as possible, as Google has indicated it could close applications at any time and demand is expected to be high.

Newsroom eligibility requirements:

  • Small and medium-sized news organizations producing original news for local communities during this time of crisis
  • Must have a digital presence and have been in operation for at least 12 months
  • Employ between 2 – 100 full-time journalists (publishers with more than 100 journalists can apply and will be considered at Google’s discretion)
  • Outlets with a focus on core news provision (not lifestyle, sports, business-to-business)
  • For-profit or nonprofit traditional news organizations
