Lecker, a veteran journalist and Wisconsin native, was named executive editor of the Wisconsin State Journal in 2022.

Prior to coming to Madison, she served as interim editor and managing/investigative editor of the Columbus Dispatch; The Toledo (Ohio) Blade, where she served as projects reporter and state editor. She also worked two years as a reporter for The (Fort Wayne, Ind.) Journal Gazette in her first full-time role out of college.

Lecker is a UW-Stevens Point graduate. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism and Spanish in 1993.

WNA Foundation will celebrate Wisconsin’s outstanding student journalists, announcing the winners in its college and high school Better Newspaper Contests.

Kelly Lecker, Wisconsin State Journal Executive Editor, will be the guest speaker. Lecker will cover the work that goes into covering the first hours after a school shooting, obstacles the media has faced and issue stories that can help further the conversation around issues such as gun violence, school safety and mental health.
