Virginia Witte, 98, passed away on June 26, 2007. She and her husband owned and published several newspapers, including the Elroy Leader-Tribune, the Kendall Keystone, the Mauston Star and the Juneau County Chronicle, from 1934 until 1962.
Virginia was born and raised in Denver and came to Kendall in 1934 to marry Oliver Witte. Oliver had recently acquired the Kendall Keystone, and Virginia worked in the printing shop until she became too pregnant to reach the letters in the drawer where the type was kept.
Virginia managed and edited the Elroy and Kendall papers between Jan. 1 and May 1, 1951, when they were sold. She and her husband owned and published the Mauston Star and the Juneau County Chronicle from 1951 until 1962.
Her proudest accomplishments included founding the Mauston Women’s Club and leading a successful fundraising campaign to buy a motorized wheelchair for Mary Podrasky, the newspapers’ Lyndon Station correspondent.
