Born to Samuel and Evelyn (Dobberstein) Shapiro on Aug. 7, 1941, in Madison, Stuart Shapiro graduated from Madison Central High School and the business school at UW-Madison. He married Wendy Adams in 1983.
Shortly thereafter, he took over operation of the Belleville Recorder, which had been owned by Wendy’s parents. Through his efforts at the Recorder, as well as volunteer work with local organizations, Shapiro became a relentless booster for the village of Belleville. He sold the newspaper in 2007. The next year, the Recorder and the (New Glarus) Post Messenger merged to become the Post Messenger Recorder.
Shapiro died on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, at the age of 82.
