Third-generation newspaper publisher Russell Fogo, who died Aug. 17, 2001, at age 89, ran The Richland Observer.
Fogo started his career as an apprentice printer and newspaper editor at The Republican Observer, working under his father. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to work at the family newspaper.
When Fogo’s father died in 1962, the two local weeklies, The Richland Democrat and The Richland Observer, merged as The Richland Observer and Fogo became co-publisher with James Olson.
Fogo also worked for the UW-Madison printing department, retiring in 1975.
Active in the Boaz area, Fogo served as the Boaz village clerk and the Richland County Board representative for the town of Dayton. He also was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Boaz Lions Club.
