Robert Richter devoted nearly 40 years of his life to The Sheboygan Press newspaper.
He knew the newspaper business well and came into contact with thousands of people through his years in advertising sales and management.
His passion in life was giving back to the community he so dearly loved, and he did so by serving many local organizations as a valued member and leader. Robert was a lifelong Sheboygan resident who advocated for fair housing, particularly for the elderly, as the first chairman of the city’s Housing Authority, a body he served for 30 years.
Robert was 89 when he died May 13, 2012. He was born on September 17, 1922, in Sheboygan to George and Alvina Freund Richter.
He attended Sheboygan schools and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UW-Madison in 1947. He served in the U.S Army during World War II and married his longtime sweetheart Bernice Ringel on April 16, 1944.
Following his college graduation, he was employed with Madison Newspapers as an advertising salesman. In 1949, he returned to Sheboygan to become the classified advertising manager of The Sheboygan Press. During his 39-year tenure with The Press, he served as the national advertising manager, office manager, and in 1977 became business manager, a position he held for nine years before becoming publisher.
Robert and his wife of 68 years, Bernice Augusta Sophie Ringel Richter, had four children, Robin, Robert, Roberta and Rebecca.
