Mildred “Mac” Johnson, longtime editor of The Elmwood Argus and The Spring Valley Sun, passed away on Feb. 8, 2006, at the age of 90.

Mac and her husband, Forrest Sr., bought The Elmwood Argus in 1944, back in a time when being the editor meant also taking on the role of reporter and sales department, soliciting local news from the community, and doing the books and billing on top of everything else.

Under Mac, the newspapers carried mostly local news but also kept readers informed on events taking place throughout the state, country and world. She wrote comment columns offering her perspective on family and community life for both papers that became community favorites. Mac and her husband also operated a commercial printing service, providing brochures and sales flyers for local businesses.

Mac enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing bridge and golf. She is remembered as intelligent and forthright, well-educated, dedicated and hard working, objective and open to change.
