Marshall F. Browne, Sr., former publisher of the East Side News in Madison, is remembered as a civic leader.
Born in Trempealeau County, Browne grew up in Prairie du Sac, Lodi and Black Earth, where his father published newspapers. In 1920, Browne married Vera Clarke, whose father had served as managing editor of the Madison Democrat.
Browne founded the East Side Print Shop in 1924 in Madison and was publisher of the East Side News. He served on many civic organizations, including the Madison Police and Fire Commission, the Madison Chamber of Commerce as president, and the City Traffic Commission.
He unsuccessfully ran for the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Republican in 1950 and 1952.
On Feb. 7, 1973, died passed away at a hospital in Madison. He was 79.
