Marion Floy Brockman, who founded and published The Valders Journal with her husband, Fred, died July 21, 2001. She was 98.
Born Oct. 6, 1902, in Marathon City, Brockman graduated from high school in Wausau and went on to teach English and Latin in Valders after getting her teaching certificate from Stevens Point State Teachers College. She married fellow Valders teacher Fred Brockman in 1929. They were married for 53 years before his death in 1982.
They published the first edition of Valders’ only newspaper on Aug. 22, 1940. The Brockmans continued to publish the paper themselves until their grandson, Brian, joined them in 1981 as editor.
Until right up to the time of her death, she worked at the newspaper as a proofreader, society writer and more. An avid reader and writer, Brockman published a book in 2000 titled, “Memories and Poems from My Lifetime.”
