Marie Schmitt Creviere was the managing editor of the De Pere Journal for many years prior to her retirement in 1999. Creviere died May 13, 2002, at age 77.
Born June 21, 1924, in Greenleaf, she married Paul J. Creviere on Nov. 22, 1945, at Old Saint Joseph Church in De Pere. A correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal for many years, Creviere was the first Wisconsin female member of Sigma Delta Chi. She also penned the award-winning column “Susie’s Mommy Says,” which appeared in the De Pere Journal for 52 years.
She was a tireless community activist, serving as a pioneer advocate for families of victims of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome as well as on the board of directors of the Wisconsin Council of Catholic Women’s Clubs. In addition, Creviere chaired the De Pere 10% Vote Drive for several years, was the first recipient of the Nan Workman award for outstanding service to the De Pere Historical Society and much, much more.
