Lyman John Howe, Jr. — known as Jack — died Oct. 24, 2010, at age 85.
Howe was among the third generation of owners at the helm of Howe Printing Company. The company, which owned the Courier Press newspaper in Prairie du Chien as well as The Guttenberg (Iowa) Press and the North Iowa Times in McGregor, Iowa, was established in 1848.
Howe, a former publisher of the Courier Press, served as president of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association in 1975.
He was born in Prairie du Chien and was a talented athlete and natural leader. After high school, Howe attended college in La Crosse and transferred to Lawrence College in Appleton. Following his time at Lawrence, he joined the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer during World War II. He sailed around the world twice and proudly served his country.
After serving their country, Jack and his older brother William joined their parents Eliese and Lyman, entering the family business Howe Printing Company and Courier Press. After losing their Lyman to a heart attack in 1949, mother and sons ran the business until 1973 when their sons, John and Gary, entered the company.
Betty (La Pointe) and Jack married and were blessed with two children, Christine (Gene) Ingham and L. John (Vickie) Howe of Prairie du Chien.
