Lois A. Goldsmith, who together with her husband, Ralph, published the Boscobel Dial for 36 years, died Feb. 27, 2011, at age 94.
Lois was born June 29, 1916, in Stone Lake in rural Washburn County, a twin daughter of Reuben F. Walter and Frances Elda (Vine) Walter. Growing up, she also lived with her family in Superior, Conrath and Ladysmith, all in Wisconsin. She graduated as salutatorian from Ladysmith High School in 1934. She married Ralph D. Goldsmith in Ladysmith on Oct. 3, 1936 and together they purchased the weekly Boscobel Dial newspaper in June 1956, and moved their family to Boscobel.
Although Ralph was already an experienced newspaperman, having been editor of the Ladysmith News for many years, Lois learned the newspaper business “from the ground up.” She began by mastering the linotype machine, and as technology progressed she learned each new phase, into the computer era. She also was bookkeeper for the business. Together, the Goldsmiths published the newspaper until they sold it on Oct. 1, 1992. Along with her husband, Lois became a Golden Member of Wisconsin Newspaper Association after their retirement.
Lois enjoyed bowling and the Goldsmiths sponsored a Boscobel bowling team, the Dialettes, for more than 30 years.
Lois had four children, Arlet, Carole, Alan, and Ralph James; along with 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
