Laurel Kronschnabl Ferris and her husband, John Kronschnabl, owned and operated The Forest Republican, the county seat newspaper in Crandon. After John’s death, Laurel continued to publish the newspaper until selling it in 1966.

One year later, Laurel married Cliff Ferris, publisher of The Rhinelander Daily News.

Laurel won numerous state and national awards for her writing. She wrote a popular column, “The Stump Sitter,” for The Forest Republican. She also was a member of the Wisconsin Press Association, the Wisconsin Women’s Press Association and the National Press Association.

She died in January 1999 at the age of 82.
