Ida Irene Mason, 87, who owned and operated The Chetek Alert longer than anyone else in the 125-year history of the newspaper, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007.
Ida and her husband, Lynn, purchased The Alert from L.P. Charles in May 1944, moving here from Washington, D.C., where Ida had been employed at the post office and Lynn at the government printing office. Lynn passed away in January 1962, and Ida continued as owner of The Alert until her retirement in 1985 — culminating 41 years in the newspaper industry.
The newspaper celebrated its 125-year milestone Nov. 9, 2007, just days before Ida’s death.
