After graduating from Sparta High School in Sparta, Wisconsin, Harland E. Everson attended George Washington University and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He met his wife, Helen, at a soap box derby in Madison, and they were married in 1949. Two years later, they bought The Edgerton Reporter. Together, they had two daughters, Diane and Carol.
In 1970, Harland, a Democrat, was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly, where he represented the 38th Assembly District for 12 years. He also served as a member of the Edgerton Board of Education from 1970 to 1971.
Harland died on Sept. 11, 1992. He was 75.
