E. Bowden Curtiss, longtime publisher of the (Darlington) Republican Journal, was born May 15, 1916, in Madison. A graduate of Madison Central High School, Curtiss went on to graduate from UW-Madison with a degree in political science and journalism.
After graduating in 1939, Curtiss went to work in Madison for The Capital Times and WIBA radio. He married Ruth Thompson on Aug. 8, 1942. Several months later, he entered the U.S. Army and spent three years in the South Pacific.
Curtiss returned from World War II and was hired by The Stoughton Courier Hub. In 1948, he and his wife Ruth purchased the Republican Journal in Darlington. They published the newspaper until retiring in 1981 and continued to write editorials for years afterward.
Curtiss died March 20, 2000, in Madison. He was 83.
