Tony Ends stepping down as editor of Brodhead newspaper

Tony Ends, who has served as editor of The (Brodhead) Independent-Register since May, is stepping aside from the role, he announced in a column welcoming new editor Robin Orvino.

It's the fifth time that Ends, who works full-time as a writer and editor for the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, has served as editor of the newspaper since 2015. He wrote that he hopes to continue writing for The Independent-Register on an occasional basis, he wrote.

USPS extends sack killing deadline

The U.S. Postal Service has extended the sack use moratorium for Periodicals mailers through Feb. 21, according to a release from the National Newspaper Association.

NNA, which has requested further extensions, noted that numerous members have reported difficulties obtaining flats trays to replace sacks in their locations. USPS has told the association that it has sufficient flats trays on hand, but there may be delays in getting them transported to offices where they are needed. 

12 students honored for highlighting importance of the First Amendment

Twelve high school and middle school students have been recognized by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation for their submissions to the 2022 Wisconsin Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest.

Students from 22 schools across the state participated in this year’s contest. Members are encouraged to republish the winning entries, which received prizes totaling $3,150.
