Former newspaper owner Eileen Evans dies at 92

Eileen Mary Evans, who owned several newspapers with her husband, Alfred, died on Wednesday, July 26, at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester. She was 92.

Evans, who worked as a journalist for her high school newspaper, began a professional career in 1963 at The Atkinson-Annawan (Ill.) News. She and her husband owned and managed several weekly newspapers, including the Hillsboro Sentry-Enterprise in Wisconsin from 1980 to 1984. In Hillsboro, Eileen played a major role, writing stories and helping to manage the business. Many of the couple's 14 living children followed in their career footsteps, including Greg Evans, who owns Evans Print + Media Group in Sparta.

Matt Johnson named editor of Richland Observer

Longtime Wisconsin journalist Matt Johnson has been named editor of the Richland Observer, he announced in a recent column.

A native of Janesville, Johnson attended UW-Whitewater and started his journalism career at the Daily Jefferson County Union in Fort Atkinson. He went on to work for the Vernon County Broadcaster and La Crosee Tribune. Johnson also served as editor of the Fennimore Times for a total of 12 years in two stints. Most recently, he was publisher of The Monroe Times for five years.

Saskia Hatvany

Hatvany joins River Valley Media Group as visual journalist

Saskia Hatvany, an Oakland, California, native who has worked as a freelance reporter and photographer for several years, has joined the River Valley Media Group as its new full-time visual journalist, the company has announced. Her first day was July 3.

Hatvany earned a double bachelor's in journalism and international relations in 2022 from San Francisco State University. In 2019, she covered the recovery efforts of communities following several wildfires in Northern California for the Sacramento Bee.
