Beloit Daily News donates archives to historical society as it moves to new office

As it begins to move into new downtown offices, the Beloit Daily News has donated materials from its archives to the Beloit Historical Society.

“As one of the oldest businesses in the region, tracing our roots to 1848, the newspaper had a treasure trove of historical materials,” Editor Bill Barth said in the Daily News story about the donations. “Preserving that past for scholarship and community use has been one of our prime motivators in planning for the move to new office space.”

Joann Schram, former Lake Country Reporter typesetter, dies at 81

Joann E. Schram, who worked many years for the Lake Country Reporter in Hartland, died Sunday, Sept. 20. She was 81.

After moving to Hartland in 1965, Schram began working at the newspaper as a typesetter, continuing in the role until her retirement.

Rise in FoodShare another indicator of pandemic’s toll

The number of Wisconsin FoodShare recipients grew to 724,200 in August, its highest point yet this year and an increase of more than 120,000 people since March, when the COVID-19 crisis began in the U.S. The number of households enrolled in the program now totals 378,200, an increase of 66,000 (21%) over last year — reversing a longstanding trend of declining program usage since 2013.

Kenosha News names Pete Wicklund managing editor

Longtime southeastern Wisconsin journalist Pete Wicklund has been named managing editor of the Kenosha News, the newspaper announced Tuesday.

He replaces Bob Heisse, who was named executive editor of the River Valley Media Group. Wicklund has spent the last 21 years with The Journal Times. He started in the Burlington bureau and has gone on to serve as a police reporter, copy editor, photographer and most recently, assistant managing editor.

Bob Heisse named executive editor of River Valley Media Group

Veteran journalist Bob Heisse has been named executive editor of the River Valley Media Group newspapers, the La Crosse Tribune announced Tuesday.

Heisse will oversee the Tribune newsroom, as well as The Chippewa Herald and Winona (Minn.) Daily News. He succeeds Rusty Cunningham, who last week announced his retirement after 41 years with Lee Enterprises. For the last two years, Heisse served as executive editor of the Kenosha News.
