Hannah Coyle to cover Hudson for Star-Observer

Hannah Coyle, who joined the staff of the (Hudson) Star-Observer full-time in June, has a new beat covering the city of Hudson.

Coyle, who played a major role in O’Rourke Media Group’s efforts to relaunch the River Falls Journal as an online-only publication, previously covered the city of River Falls and Pierce County. She previously contributed as a freelancer for the group of papers along the Wisconsin-Minnesota border. She also served as an intern for the newspapers in summer 2018, when they were still part of RiverTown Multimedia.

Gilbert, Haudricourt announce retirements from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Craig Gilbert and Tom Haudricourt, veteran reporters of more than 70 combined years at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, each announced on Twitter this week their plans to retire from the newspaper.

Gilbert, the newspaper’s Washington bureau chief, has spent 35 years as a political reporter for the Journal Sentinel, covering every presidential campaign since 1988 and chronicling Wisconsin’s role as an important swing state in national elections. Through a fellowship with the Marquette Law School’s Lubar Center, he will be doing Wisconsin political analysis that will appear in the Journal Sentinel later this year. 

Haudricourt has spent the last 36 years covering the Milwaukee Brewers and Major League Baseball for the Journal Sentinel. He has won numerous awards for his work, including being named Wisconsin sportswriter of the year by the National Sports Media Association four times, including back-to-back honors in 2018 and 2019. 

WNA, Rebuild Local News testify on behalf of advertising tax credit bill

Members of the Wisconsin Assembly Committee on Ways and Means heard testimony on Wednesday in support of a bill that would provide small businesses with a tax credit to advertise in local media.

Speaking on behalf of the members of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association were Mike Hollihan, Multi Media Channels, Richard Lee, Inter-County Cooperative Publishing Association, WNA President Gregg Walker, The Lakeland Times (Minocqua) and WNA executive director Beth Bennett. Representatives of Wisconsin-based media were joined in supporting the measure by the Rebuild Local News Coalition.

Volunteers needed to judge Arkansas advertising contest

As part of our 2022 contest judging partnership, the Arkansas Press Association needs at least 10 volunteers from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association to judge its advertising contest next month. The deadline to sign up is Friday, Feb. 4. All judging will be done online and is scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 7, with a deadline of Friday, Feb. 18.

For the first time in a decade, the state taxes paid by Wisconsin residents and businesses in 2021 grew as a share of income in the state. Yet the historically low levels of federal and local taxes in recent years have meant that the overall tax burden – and related spending on public services – have kept dropping for Wisconsinites.

Advertising tax credit bill to be heard by Assembly committee

In advance of a public hearing Wednesday for the WNA's advertising tax credit bill, publishers are strongly encouraged to call members of the Assembly Committee on Ways and Means and request they support the passage of Assembly Bill 762. The bill aims to give financial relief to news organizations and small businesses by providing a 50% tax credit to advertise in local media. 

The hearing is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 225 Northwest of the state Capitol. Industry representatives testifying on behalf of the bill for the WNA include Richard Lee, Inter-County Cooperative Publishing Association, Mike Hollihan, Multi Media Channels, WNA President Gregg Walker, The (Minocqua) Lakeland Times, and WNA executive director Beth Bennett.
