Artwork by longtime newspaper man on display in Eagle River

The artwork of longtime newspaper publisher Walter Gander is on display in a special exhibit by the Walter E. Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River.

Gander, a longtime printer who once owned the Vilas County News-Review, immigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1898, and came to Eagle River in 1903. He took up painting later in life, creating landscape works of the Northwoods and scenes inspired by his childhood on the coast of England. The library exhibit, which runs through July 30, features samplings of Gander's work that have been reassembled through the generosity of family and friends.

WNA seeking nominations for Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association is accepting nominations for the 2022 Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame class through Monday, Aug. 15.

Nominations are open to anyone — living or deceased — who has contributed above and beyond the call of duty to the Wisconsin newspaper industry. It is expected that the individual should have dedicated at least 15 years to newspapering. However, length of service is not a major determinant.
