WNA Foundation annual Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest

The WNA Foundation is excited to announce annual Wisconsin Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest, which aims to increase civic education and engagement while celebrating the rights established by the First Amendment.

The contest is open to all Wisconsin middle and high school students, including home-schooled students. Essays and cartoons should focus on the importance of the First Amendment. Students are encouraged to draw from personal experiences, current events and historical examples.

It’s no secret that election misinformation is rampant. It’s an issue that has prompted mistrust in elections, voting access restrictions and a decline in public confidence — and it's up to election officials, civic groups and the media to oppose this threat.

That’s why we’re encouraging members to participate in the Elections 101 campaign and donate space to run a series of ads aimed at fostering a better understanding of election administration in our state and establishing more trust in the process.

Jonah Chester named Wisconsin Watch/WPR investigative fellow

Jonah Chester has joined the Wisconsin Watch newsroom as Wisconsin Public Radio's 2022-23 Mike Simonson Memorial Investigative Reporting Fellow, the outlet has announced.

Chester most recently worked at Public News Service, a national radio news service, where he covered Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. He previously produced the 6 O'Clock News at WORT 89.9 FM in Madison, where he won numerous awards from the Milwaukee Press Club and Wisconsin Broadcasters Association for his reporting on issues in Dane County and south-central Wisconsin.

Longtime Milwaukee business manager Bonnie Porter dies at 69

Bonnie Rae Porter, longtime business manager for The (Milwaukee) Daily Reporter, died on Aug. 4, at the Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Ill. She was 69.

In December 2007, Porter joined The Daily Reporter, where she worked as the business manager until her retirement in 2020. A celebration of life will be held at a later time, according to the obituary.
