A commanding presence in northeastern Wisconsin was John Torinus, editor, columnist and general manager of The Post-Crescent in Appleton. “Tor” worked 50 years in professional journalism. He started at the Green Bay Press-Gazette during the Depression and rose to executive editor. He finished his career as editor and general manager of The Post-Crescent.
After his retirement, Torinus wrote three books, two on sailing and the third on the history of the Green Bay Packers. He was a leader in the fight to keep the Packers in Green Bay. His unique insight into the team and its significance began when he first wrote articles from Dartmouth College as a correspondent for the Green Bay daily.
Also an electronic journalist, he delivered a popular daily news report on WJPG radio and live editorials on Channel 11 in Green Bay.
Torinus served as leader of the predecessor to the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the Wisconsin Associated Press.
He led dozens of civic organizations, including the Green Bay and Appleton United Way campaigns, and was a major capital fundraiser for the Boy Scouts.
