Tom Schultz began his career in 1962 as a carrier boy with the Watertown Daily Times. And he continued working on behalf of the community and its readers for the next 57 years, including 45 as managing editor.
Over the course of his more than five decades there, Schultz elevated the newspaper to the forefront of technology. He helped lead the transition from letterpress printing to offset in 1971 and, during a time when most industry peers weren’t considering such leaps, introduced personal computers into the newsroom. He later led the transition to digital photography.
Schultz has long been one of the most respected editors in Wisconsin, known for his commitment to quality content and unwavering journalistic principles. An ambassador of the industry, he’s a strict believer that the truth matters and informing readers is a high calling.
His work on behalf of the community stretches beyond the newsroom. He’s played key roles in founding the Watertown Area Community Foundation and Riverfest, an annual festival that brings more than 30,000 visitors to the city each year. He also helped construct a family aquatic center and led a $3.5 million expansion project that added classrooms to an elementary school.
Schultz is passionate about the Watertown Daily Times, his community and the newspaper industry. Because of his dedication, professionalism and commitment, they have all been better served.
