The Gazette celebrates 175 years in Janesville

Established three years before Wisconsin became a state, The (Janesville) Gazette on Friday marked the 175th anniversary of its first issue, printed Aug. 14, 1845.

In recognition of Friday’s anniversary, the newspaper published a timeline of major events in its history, along with several historical photos of past staff, newsrooms and printing operations.

RCFP, NPPA and CPJ to offer free training sessions for journalists covering 2020 conventions

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the National Press Photographers Association and the Committee to Protect Journalists are offering offering makeup trainings for anyone who missed their sessions last week on the 2020 Democratic National Convention and other national political events.

The WNA Foundation on Friday honored the work of newspapers across the state, announcing the award winners and newspapers of the year in the 2019 WNAF Better Newspaper Contest.

Recipients of 2019 Newspaper of the Year Awards were Publisher Mary Jo Villa and The Gazette, Janesville, (Daily Division) and Publisher Gregg Walker and The Lakeland Times, Minocqua (Weekly Division).

Evers releases guidance for businesses when they reopen

As many Wisconsin businesses look to return to providing products and services, Gov. Tony Evers on Friday announced business-specific guidance to help keep workers, customers and families safe when the state’s “safer-at-home” order is lifted.

The brochures include general guidelines for all businesses, as well as industry-specific advice. General recommendations include making sure that employees who are sick don’t come to work, curtailing business travel whenever possible, promoting work-from-home arrangements and making sure employees have access to sanitizers and personal protective equipment when appropriate.

WNA Foundation announces college, high school contest winners

The WNA Foundation on Monday celebrated Wisconsin’s student journalists, announcing the winners in its college and high school Better Newspaper Contests.

The 2019 WNAF Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest featured 318 entries from 14 campus newspapers across 20 categories. Arches, Mount Mary College’s student publication, took home top honors in General Excellence.

Winners of the WNAF’s professional contest will be announced on May 15.

Gregg Walker, publisher of The Lakeland Times and The Northwoods River News, was elected president of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association during its annual meeting, held virtually via Zoom on Thursday.

Walker succeeds Paul Seeling, publisher of the (Spring Valley) Sun-Argus, the Woodville Leader and MyGatewayNews.com.
