Oneida County sheriff to be honored with open government award

Oneida County sheriff Grady Hartman will be honored with the Wisconsin Newspaper Association's inaugural Sunshine in Government award.

The award, launched this year by the WNA Board of Directors, recognizes efforts by Wisconsin citizens and public officials to protect and strengthen open government. It will be presented during the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, Nov. 10, at The Madison Club in downtown Madison.

UW-Green Bay honors Frank Wood with media center dedication

The Frank Wood Media Newsroom was dedicated Monday at UW-Green Bay’s new media center in honor of the late publisher, reports The (Green Bay) Press Times.

Wood, who was inducted into the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2002, owned Brown County Publishing, the Green Bay News-Chronicle, and other weekly papers in the area. The newsroom is one of many spaces in the new media center — a $5.7 million renovation that coincides with the rebirth of student-run media at UW-Green Bay. 

Milwaukee Press Club honors 2022 Media Hall of Fame inductees

George Stanley, vice president of the WNA board of directors and Scott Peterson, president of the WNA Foundation represented the WNA at the Milwaukee Press Club's 2022 Media Hall of Fame ceremony on Friday, Oct. 14.

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association was presenting sponsor of the event that saw the following inductees honored: Denise Callaway, WTMJ-TV; Liddie Collins, Milwaukee Courier; Joyce Garbaciak, WITI-TV; Thomas E. Mitchell Jr., Milwaukee Community Journal; Jim Stingl, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Martin Hintz, (deceased) Milwaukee Sentinel; and Meg Jones, (deceased) Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Cashton Record sold to Evans Print & Media Group

Paul and Kim Fanning, owners of the Cashton Record for nearly 24 years, have announced the sale of the newspaper to Evans Print & Media Group. The Sparta-based news group is owned and operated by Greg and Sue Evans, who also own the Monroe County Herald and the Hillsboro Sentry-Enterprise.

The new owners will continue to serve local businesses from the existing office, with no change to current staffing, according to the announcement.

WNA Foundation annual Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest

The WNA Foundation is excited to announce annual Wisconsin Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest, which aims to increase civic education and engagement while celebrating the rights established by the First Amendment.

The contest is open to all Wisconsin middle and high school students, including home-schooled students. Essays and cartoons should focus on the importance of the First Amendment. Students are encouraged to draw from personal experiences, current events and historical examples.

Wisconsin Newspaper Association
