The U.S. Postal Service has extended the sack use moratorium for Periodicals mailers through Feb. 21, according to a release from the National Newspaper Association.
NNA, which has requested further extensions, noted that numerous members have reported difficulties obtaining flats trays to replace sacks in their locations. USPS has told the association that it has sufficient flats trays on hand, but there may be delays in getting them transported to offices where they are needed.
Twelve high school and middle school students have been recognized by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation for their submissions to the 2022 Wisconsin Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest.
Students from 22 schools across the state participated in this year’s contest. Members are encouraged to republish the winning entries, which received prizes totaling $3,150.

The Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, a nonprofit group that works to protect access to public meetings and records, is now accepting nominations for its annual Openness in Government Awards, or Opees.
Nominations, along with supporting documentation, should be submitted by Friday, Feb. 10, to blueders@gmail.com.
Last month, the WNA Foundation opened registration for the Wisconsin Civics Games. We've already had several schools sign up to participate, but we need members' help to reach a wider audience.

We are accepting both pitches for member-led programming and requests for programming topics. Sessions are 45 to 55 minutes and, if selected, will be presented on either Thursday, March 23, or Friday, March 24, at The Concourse Hotel in Madison.
The deadline to register for the 2023 Wisconsin Civics Games, which aims to promote civics education and encourage Wisconsin high school students to develop an interest in public service, is Feb. 20.
This year's regional competitions will be held virtually on Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14. The top-performing teams will advance to the state finals on Friday, May 12, at the State Capitol.
The International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (ISWNE) is accepting entries for its annual Golden Quill editorial writing contest. The deadline to enter is Feb. 1.
Entries must have been published between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2022. All non-daily newspapers are eligible to enter. Online-only newspapers must be considered community news sites. Cost is $10 per entry for ISWNE members, $15 per entry for non-members and $5 per entry for students.
The deadline to enter the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation's High School and Collegiate Better Newspaper Contests is Monday, Feb. 6.
The contests recognize excellence in student journalism across the state and are open to all student journalists attending public or private schools in Wisconsin. All entries must have been published between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2022.
