Nominations for WNA Sunshine in Government Award due Sept. 26

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association is seeking nominations for its new Sunshine in Government Award, which aims to recognize efforts by Wisconsin citizens and public officials to protect and strengthen open government. The inaugural award will be presented during the WNA Foundation Hall of Fame awards banquet on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Nomination materials should be sent via email to WNA Membership & Communications Director Julia Hunter by Monday, Sept. 26.

Competitive Wisconsin to host broadband summit

Leaders from New North and Competitive Wisconsin Inc. are co-hosting a summit to explore developing a successful broadband expansion strategy.

The statewide in-person and virtual summit for local elected officials, business leaders, economic and community development professionals and members of the public will be from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at Fox Valley Technical College DJ Bordini Center.

Hieb elected president of Newspaper Association Managers

Laurie Hieb, executive director of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, was elected president of Newspaper Association Managers, Inc. (NAM), for 2022-23 during the organization's annual summer conference on Aug. 5 in Austin, Texas.

Beth Bennett, executive director of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, becomes immediate past president. Continuing directors are Susan Patterson Plank, executive director of the Iowa Newspaper Association, and Phil Lucey, executive director of the North Carolina Press Association.

WNA seeking nominations for Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association is accepting nominations for the 2022 Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame class through Monday, Aug. 15.

Nominations are open to anyone — living or deceased — who has contributed above and beyond the call of duty to the Wisconsin newspaper industry. It is expected that the individual should have dedicated at least 15 years to newspapering. However, length of service is not a major determinant.

The Monroe Times, EagleHerald named 2021 Newspapers of the Year

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation honored the work of newspapers across the state during the WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest Awards Banquet on Friday, June 24, at The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club in downtown Madison, Wis.

Recipients of 2021 Newspaper of the Year Awards were Publisher Todd Colling and the EagleHerald, Marinette, (Daily Division) and Publisher John Ingebritsen and The Monroe Times (Weekly Division).

Purchase your tickets to the WNA Awards Banquet

The deadline to register for the 2021 WNA Better Newspaper Contest Awards Banquet, which will be held as an in-person standalone event on June 24 at The Concourse in Madison, is June 15. A reception will start at 5 p.m., with the awards ceremony to follow at 6 p.m.

The banquet will honor both student and professional winners of our Better Newspaper Contests, and is the first time the event will be held in-person since 2019. Rooms are available at a discounted rate of $149 through the WNA' s room block. The deadline to book at the reduced rate has been extended to June 14.
