More Wisconsin communities turn to wheel taxes
Wisconsin has allowed municipalities to charge a local vehicle registration tax, or “wheel tax” since 1967, and counties to charge the tax since 1976. Until 2011, only four communities had a “wheel tax” in place. By the end of 2017, however, the list of communities that had adopted the tax had grown to 27; from 2011 to 2017, wheel tax revenues nearly tripled from $7.1 million to $20.7 million.
