Delafield police issue public records scam alert

Individuals who had items appear before the Delafield Plan Commission or other city boards should be cautious about emails asking them to pay fees via wire transfer.

A May 6, 2026 item in the Waukesha Freeman detailed the scam. According to the story:

The Delafield Police Department issued a warning that “fraudsters” are utilizing public records to send emails asking for money.

Individuals who receive these scam emails should report them via email to police@delafieldpolice.gov or call the non-emergency dispatch phone number at 262-446-5070 to speak to an officer.

At the end of April, the Muskego Police Department warned of a similar scam. In that situation, a person was pretending to be a city employee and sent an email asking real customers and residents that the city does business with for payment of an invoice via wire transfer.

“There were also misspellings, the wrong domain in the email address, the wrong title of a staff member, the invoice amount did not make any sense, the asking for a wire transfer, etc.,” the Muskego Police Department said.

“The City of Delafield will never request a wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or other non-standard pay-ment of fees. If you ever have a question you can contact the City of Delafield city hall at 262-646-6220,” reads a Facebook post from the Delafield Police Department.
